I spent 18 years in an abusive marriage. Eating, or should I say overeating, helped me make it through each day. After my divorce, I found myself a single mom with four fantastic kids. As the last of my kids got ready to leave for college, something changed in me.
Christmas Eve of 2004, I attended the annual Christmas party at a good friend’s house. I felt particularly uncomfortable sitting in the same dining room chair that I had inhabited year after year. Another great discovery I made has been to plan my meals the night before. I prepare my lunch and snacks ahead every night. By preparing in advance, I have time to think about what I would like to eat, rather than grabbing the first thing that catches my fancy. I make better choices when I plan ahead.
Walking It Off
At the beginning of the plan, something in me knew that adding physical activity to my life would be an integral part of my success. I started a walking program with my yellow lab, Bailey. He was the most reliable of my “friends.” He never said no to a good walk! We started walking about a mile a day. For the first few weeks, I struggled with a backache that went right down my left leg. I thought I was going to die, but I continued and gradually increased my walking, little by little each month, until I could do between two and three miles a day. Now I practically run up the hills that used to make me nearly pass out!One of the best parts about losing the weight is my newfound sense of confidence. I also love it when I run into someone I haven’t seen in a while and they walk right by me. After they realize it’s me, they just stare; it’s great. I enjoy my life and have so much to look forward to. I can’t wait to have grandchildren. Now I know I will be able to play with them on the floor and be able to get up when I am done.
Portion control has always been a problem for me. I have learned to buy things in individual packages. They are already measured out and I can count the POINTS values accurately. The 100calorie packs are a lifesaver. Sometimes they cost a bit more, but I’m worth it!
I love the “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” spray. I even bring it with me when I go out to eat. My friends used to laugh, but 110 pounds later, they aren’t laughing anymore.
Take one day at a time. Try not to get overwhelmed. Each successful day brings you one step closer to your goals.
I set my weightloss goals in 10pound increments. It made the trip to the final goal more bearable.
I spend time on the weekends making meals for the week ahead. I place the chilis and stews in singleserving plastic containers so that I can just grab something when I return home from work tired and hungry.
